Some hold the view that Turiya is Pure Awareness and Turiyatita is to be Aware of Awareness.

Yoga Vasishtha & Kaivalya Navaneetam talk of 8 mental states similar to 8 stages of Yoga. Mind is progressively made more diluted called tanumaanasa in sanskrit. Final stage is manonaasha.

General Discussion / Adi Daa's Ratings

Great western spiritualist Adi Daa says :-
(1) Buddha = Ramana = 6,
(2) Jesus = 5 and
(3) Adi Daa ( himself )  = 7.

We have been fed on cognitions, perceptions, memory, objective knowledge et cetera. Once mind is divested of these things, only Brahman remains.

There is no contradiction between Seer and Brahman. After one attains Self-Knowledge, individuality is lost forever like river discharged into ocean.

In fact, one should practise feeling Transcendental Awareness in Waking state. In a few years, one may attain Turiya.

Gaudapada propounded Ajatavada & Drishti-Srishtivada.
   There is another view which says there was sphota in Brahman. A big sound resembling AUM got projected. This sound carried infinite pranic energy. So it is also called PRANAVA. Part of this sound got translated into Light. And  Light got converted into Matter. And thus universe came into existence.

All mental states are inextricably interlinked. Love-making in dream precipitates release of vital energy into Waking.

Ramana said there is no mind. Yoga-Vasishtha says world is son of a barren woman. So we are all imagining mind & world but in reality they are not there.

There are 3 quivers-cum-effervescences :- spanda, sphurana and sphurti. Brahman boils to create mental mayic states. And there are subsequently infinite imaginations & illusions.

Waking = Physical realm,
Dream = Astral realm,
Sleep = Causal realm,
Yoga Nidra = Zone between Causal realm & Absolute and
Turiya  = Absolute.

(1)   Did you mean to say :-

 Turiyam = the Self = Brahman   or
 Turiyam = the Self - Brahman  ?

(2)   Nisargadatta is said to have had remarked once that Brahman is  raw mango and Self is ripe mango.

It may be true but some people equate mind with maya and turiyatita with Para-Brahman.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Dream more real than Waking
« on: December 02, 2010, 08:33:59 PM »
Mental states in ascending order are waking, dream, sleep, deep sleep, ati-sushupti / yoga-nidra, turiya and turiyatita. So logic says that dream is higher and more real than waking.

What is important is not good or bad or evil but differentiation between real and unreal. Of course, Samkhya philosophy & Rig-Veda stress on order in life and what is conducive for attainment of Atman.
