General Discussion / The Power of Arunachala......
« on: November 05, 2017, 07:06:21 AM »

Arunachala has always been renowned as the bestower of liberation, the destroyer of the ego, the remover of the false notion 'I am the body' - as the jnana-Guru par excellence.

When Brahma and Vishnu began to quarrel, being deluded by pride and egoism, Lord Arunachala Siva appeared before them in the form of a column of fire, thereby vanquishing their egoism and teaching them true knowledge. When Sakti, Goddess Parvati, wished to attain a state in which she could do no wrong, Lord Siva sent her to Arunachala, where she merged and became one with him. Thus, even to Brahma and Vishnu, Arunachala was Guru, and to Parvati it was the place where she lost her separate individuality.

Throughout the ages saints and sages have sung verses in Sanskrit, Tamil and other Indian languages extolling the unique power of Arunachala to root out the ego and to bestow Self-knowledge. All the four great Saiva sages of Tamil Nadu, Manikkavachagar, Sundaramurti, Appar and Jnanasambandhar, have sung in praise of Arunachala. In one verse often pointed out by Sri Bhagavan, Jnanasambandhar described this hill as being jnana-tiral, a dense mass of jnana. And Sundaramurti, singing in Tiruvanaikka, remembers Arunachala and sings, 'O Annamalai, you can be known only to those who give up the attachment to the body'.

These puranic stories and songs of ancient sages all confirm the fact that Arunachala is the supreme jnana-Guru. But this fact has received its most striking confirmation from Sri Bhagavan. In verse nineteen of Aksharamanamalai he explicitly states that Arunachala shines as the form of his Guru; and in the same verse he reveals the function of the real Guru, namely to destroy all our defects, including the root-defect, the ego, to bestow all good qualities upon us and to rule over us.

General Discussion / rare silent video of shri bhagavan
« on: August 12, 2016, 08:34:11 AM »
Found this in FB?.For some reason there is no audio ? I dont know if this is a problem with my laptop.  Only then, I realized the power of silence when watching Bagawan. Isn?t his teaching all about inner silence and jeeva-brahma aikyam? I see it as a coincidence! The silence in this video amplifies Bagawan?s blessings?.While watching rare videos like this and Periyava, I prefer no background sound ? gives us an opportunity to do our prayer peacefully.

Look at His eyes with ever-flowing peace and karunyam!! Reminds me of Paul Brunton?s book on his experience on sitting in front of Bagawan of hours together with absolutely no sound whatsoever!

How blessed are we to live in the same century as mahans like Him!!

Om Bagawn Sri Ramana Maharishi Padham Potri potri !!

General Discussion / Stellar devotee passes away
« on: July 18, 2016, 08:00:39 AM »
there is  a sad report that:

"Ashram is served by many devotees who don?t live in the ashram. One such devotee is T V Venkatraman. He rendered invaluable proof-reading service from his residence in Chennai. All ashram publications in English were carefully and meticulously proofed by him. We are sad to report that this great devotee attained the lotus feet of Bhagavan on Friday July 15th. He was 87 years old and is survived by his daughter and son.
During the early days of penury at the ashram Venkatraman?s help was enormous. They used to print the books first and allow the ashram to pay according to its financial convenience. Swami Ramanananda Saraswati (formerly T N Venkatraman and former president of Ramana ashram) used to affectionately call him ?Jupiter? because he was associated with Jupiter press. His greatness can be judged by the reactions of those who for whom he offered his professional service. The editor of the Mountain path Chris Quilkey writes ?I am in deep shock. This is news I did not want to hear. He was a rock to us all and now it is gone. But I am happy for T V Venkatraman as I am sure he is now in a better place after a lifetime of service. What a wonderful person. He helped me so much in the beginning with his humble and respectful ways. Michael Highburger the editor of Saranagathi newspaper writes ?Too sad. But , you know, that day we took the photo together back in May, you could feel that it was the last time we would see him. He even almost said it. Thankfully we got to see him one last time. What a wonderful soul. I shall truly miss him?.Anand Ramanan remembers the day about 30 years ago when he wept to witness the sale of Jupiter press in Mount Road. He says ?Venkatraman was a pillar of strength to the ashram. KVS mama says ?very unassuming, self-effacing devotee. He was a perfectionist when it came to proof-reading. He would not even miss a comma.?

May his soul rest in Eternal Peace.

"Dear Sri Ramana Devotees !

He was very close to me, a fellow devotee.

General Discussion / meditation with open eyes
« on: June 10, 2016, 05:19:53 PM »
namo ramana

When we sit to meditate, if we close our eyes, what we do is that we send a signal to our mind, intellect and our physical body that sleep is coming close and that signal, in turn, induces sleep though that is the last thing we want to induce inside ourselves, while meditating.  Bhagavan  has preached that when we are likely to fall asleep to  not to go sleep but ask who is getting sleep and thereby try continue awake and pursue Vichara and thus awake . Meditation could therefore be a way to wake up and stay awake, not only physically, but in terms of being conscious and alert about what is happening internally and externally.

is it therefore good to practice with eyes open, so that during your meditation, you can become used to going beyond the physical inputs of what you see, hear, feel and smell and at the same time, remain exposed to these inputs?.[shri Bhagavan has suggested to better keep the eyes closed as out side world of objects are sure to distract the meditation/ Vichara]

By practicing with open or semi-open eyes, will it not becomes easier to train one to create the accurate state of consciousness while still being faintly aware of our surroundings. This will be essential in day to day activities when we want to stay connected to our inner peace while others around us may not necessarily be very peaceful. It will also help us to move deeply into our peaceful consciousness during conversations which at the same time, require alertness to go into the depth of ideas and concepts. When we are established in our peaceful, spiritual state (as a result of meditating), it is as if we are keeping our third eye, the eye of our intellect, open, which gives us the ability to see, in actions and interactions, what is true and false, and to make the right decisions without being influenced by others or our own emotions. All the above abilities are required many times during the day. We obviously can?t keep closing our eyes to meditate each time any of these abilities are required but given the above humble comments will a person be effective in his transactions in day to day life suppose  if keeping eyes and being in Vichara awareness become open becomes a choice.........

welcome  opinions/comments please
