Title: Sri Vinayaka Chaturthi - 09.09.2013
Post by: Subramanian.R on September 09, 2013, 07:52:09 AM

The Hindus celebrate Sri Vinakaya Chaturthi on the fourth day of waxing moon in the month of Srvavana every year.
It is not Ganesa's birthday.  Sri Ganesa is eternal and ever present and without beginning and end.  How today is
observed to remember the great god who creates obstacles and also removes obstacles.

The celebrations for Sri Ganapahi is done in all Siva Temples.  However, there are temples exclusively for Sri Ganapathi,
at Pillaiyar Patti, Chettinad and also in Tiruchirapalli atop the rock fort.  These two temples witness huge crowds to
witness the abhishekam, alanakaram and pujas for Sri Ganesa. Crowds climb up about 400 steps and witness the pujas
in Tiruchirapalli.  They submit modhakam ( jaggery, desicated coconut balls, clothed in baked rice flour with some salt).
Modhkam means poornam of Fullness.  He is the First God and even Siva had to worship Him before he went to fight
Tripura demons.  Devi worshipped Him, before she went to fight the demons like Mahishasura.  He helped Muruga's
wedding with VaLLi.

Temples have Ganapati's idol are installed  with due prana-pradhishta, i.e, imbibing power through mantras.  However,
the Ganapati idols in river banks, under peepul tree or under banyana tree, street corners require no prana pradhishta,
as they gain power as more and more devotees come and pray to Him.

Most of the Tamizh and Sanskrit literature also start with invocation of Ganapati.  The first verse is in praise of Ganesa
in any Tamizh /Sanskrt devotional literature. Tevaram, Tiruvachakam and a few Sanskrit literature/puranas are exceptions.

Among the Saiva Saints, Tirunavalur Nambi was a great Ganapati bhakta. It is he who elaborated on Sundarmurti's
Tiruthonda thohai, the long poem listing 63 Saiva Saints.

Sri Bhagavan has also composed a verse on the Ganesa on the niche of the Cave, where He was staying.

Fruits, modakam, flowers, sugarcane,  pounded rice etc., are placed as naivedyam for Sri Ganapati Puja,

Arunachala Siva.

The anklets
on the red lotus feet
of the cool baby elephant
sing many songs.
The golden waist chain
and fine skirts
resting upon his rainbow waist
beautifully shining.

His weighty tusk!

His elephant face
& the auspicious orange mark
is easy to perceive.

Five hands,
goad & noose,
his body of deep blue
has made my breast its home.

His hanging mouth,
four sets of shoulders,
three eyes,
and three musk trails...
His two ears,
with golden hair shining,
and three threads intertwined
upon his glowing breast...
He is the true knowledge:
Turiya, the Sleepless Sleep,
goes beyond
the word's meaning.
Wonder
has stood personified
as the Wish-fulfilling Tree!
As the Bull Elephant!
He who rides the mouse
sniffs out the three fruits.
I begged him,
"Take me now...
as your servant!"

He appeared as a mother
and showered his grace upon me.
Cleaved from me
the confusion that...
"Once born, I shant die."

Thus the pristine
and primal letters five
shall unite with me.
Shall came and enter my heart.

Assuming the Guru's guise
and keeping a sacred foot
upon this Earth,
he establishes life's meaning.

He joyously bestowed the grace
of the Path of No-Suffering.

Wielding his tusk as a weapon,
he weeds out
the cruel fruits of action.

My ears devour his teaching
without ever being filled.

He reveals the insatiable
Clarity of Wisdom.
The means to master the five senses.

He has sweetly graced me
with joyous compassion.

He proclaimed
that single thought
which shrinks
the delusionary power of the senses.

Putting an end
to this birth
and the next,
he has removed darkness,
and graced me with all
the four stages of mukti (enlightenment).

He cuts off the delusion
of the three impurities.

With one mantra
he showed how
the Nine Openings
and the Five Sense Doors
can be shut...

This is the Ankusha (elephant-goad)
of the six chakras:

Without stopping...
Standing firmly...
Let idle chatter be discarded.
He announced the letter
of the Idylla & Pingala
and showed that the end
of the Circle's Edge
is in the skull.

The snake hangs
on the pillar
that is the junction
of the three realms.

He helped me realize
it's tongue.

In the Kundalini
one joins the silence...

It breaks open...
and the mantra that rises up
comes out
because of his teaching.

The rising flame,
breaking out
of Muladhara,
is caused to rise
by the wind.

Born of the single thought
which he has taught.

He related...
The state of drinking Amrita,
The movements of the Sun,
& the character of
The One Who Favors the Lily (the Moon).
He revealed
the 8+8 facets
of Vishudha Chakra
along with all the qualities
of my bodies wheels.

He sweetly graced me
with the ability to contemplate
the six faces gross
and the four faces subtle.

He enabled me to perceive
the subtle body,
and gain the darshan
of the Eight States.

He has revealed
within my mind
the Skull's Gate,
and given the sweet grace
of being established in mukti.

He made me know myself.
He showered me with grace.
He pulled out past karma...
by its root.

Without a single word or thought
my mind is one with him.

He has concentrated my mind,
clarified my intellect,
and said,
"Light & Darkness
share a common place."

He presses me down
into the grace giving ecstasy.

In my ear
he renders limitless bliss.

He has weeded out all difficulty
and shown the path of grace.

He has revealed Sada Shiva
within the sound.
He has revealed the Shiva Lingam
within the mind.

And he has revealed that...
The smaller than the smallest,
The larger that the largest,
stands within…
like ripe sugarcane.
He made me understand
the role of the ash
smeared on the brows
of the devotees merged in truth,
with whom
he made me
one.
He made both heart & mind
achieve the state of knowing
the precious meaning
of the Five Letters.

Having given to me
the True Nature of All Existence...

I am ruled
by the wise Vinayagar...

at whose feet
I take refuge.

I am scared with wish anything after Teacher's Day :). Anyways, Happy Ganesha Chaturthi to all forum members...

Traditional hindu stories tell that Lord Ganesha was created by goddess Parvathi, consort of Lord Shiva. Parvati created Ganesha out of sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door while she bathed. Lord Shiva returned and, as Ganesha didn't know him, he didn't allow him to enter. Lord Shiva became enraged and asked his follower ghosts to teach the child some manners. Ganesha was very powerful, being born of Parvati, the embodiment of shakti (or power). He defeated the ghost-followers (called "Ghana"s) and declared nobody was allowed to enter while his mother was bathing. The sage of heavens, Narada, along with the Saptarshi (the seven wise rishis) sensed a growing turmoil and went to appease the boy with no results. Angered, the king of Gods, Indra attacked the boy with his entire heavenly army but even they didn't stand a chance. By then, this issue had become a matter of pride for Parvathi and Shiva.

After the devas were defeated, the trinity, the controller, preserver and destroyer of the universe launched an attack against Ganesha. Amidst the fighting, Shiva severed the head of the child. And brought on Parvathi's rage. Seeing her son dead, Parvathi revealed her true self, as the Adi-shakti, the prime energy that fuels the universe and sustains matter. Taking on a terrible form, she vowed to destroy the universe where her son was killed and re-create a better one. The Gods prostrated before her and Shiva promised that her son will live again. The trinity hunted the world for a head and came across a mother elephant crying for her dead baby. They consoled the mother and fixed the head of the baby elephant in place of Ganesha's head. Lord Shiva also declared that from this day, the boy would be called as "Ganesha" (Gana-Isha : lord of the Ganas). In this way, Lord Ganesha came to be depicted as the elephant-headed God.

According to the Linga Purana, Ganesha was created by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the request of the Devas for being a Vighnakartaa (obstacle-creator) in the path of Rakshasas, and a Vighnahartaa (obstacle-averter) to help the Devas achieve fruits of their hard work.

This is the invocatory verse on Vinayaka in Abhirami Andati of Abhirami Bhattar:

You are the son of Uma who is part of Siva wearing konAri and shanbaga garlands.  You are having a form that is like  hue of dark rain clouds.  Please confer me blessings to complete this Abhirami Andati on Uma who gave birth to all seven worlds.

This is the invocatory verse on Vinayaka for Arunagiri Nathar's Kandar Anubhti:

செஞ்சொற் புனைமாலை சிறந் திடவே

In order to melt my heart to seek the refuge of Shanmuka (Muruga), I shall compose this poem, with choice words.  For this purpose,
I seek the blessings of five armed Vinayaka.

Friends,
May Lord Ganesha bless us with Bhakti and Mukti. We love this 'Child god'-Pillaiyar as he is endearingly called.I have a Request. There already is a thread started by our friend Prashant on last year's vinayaka Chaturthi.I have posted Kanchi mahaswami's wonderful talk on pillaiyar and his great Devotee-the grandma avvaiyar, the Doyen of all Sages.
May I request you to shift your posts here to that place,so that we can have everything in one place.
On this Vinayaka Chaturthi day,I have one more request-particularly from the regular posters here in this forum. Please restrict opening fresh threads whenever possible. Please try to have fewer threads and this way,it may be easy for anyone to review what he has posted and where-it will also be easy for others to dig out anything read sometime back. This would avoid the needle in a haystack type of Situation.
It will help us to recall how Sri Bhagavan used to economise by writing everything into a notebook which he himself used to stitch-and even if others presented him with Fresh notebooks and pencils,he would hand it over to the 'Office'.We need to learn this 'Frugality' and the 'Discipline' that goes with it.
These days,I have seen even in the Office,I have observed how a Notepad and pen will be distributed during every key meeting, and people used to scribble some notes, only to be forgotten soon and discarded to the 'Paper vala'!
If we on the other hand use only a few threads,it will also help us to consolidate all the Hardwork done by way of keying in sharing and make it useful for others-even if we are not around to help them find it.

Here is the link to the thread started by our friend Prashant.Greetings to him and all of you on this wonderful Vinayaka chaturthi as we worship and adore this 'Beloved son-god' pillaiyar.

This is the invocatory verse for Kandar Alankaram:

அடலருணைத் திருக் கோபுரத் தேயந்த வாயிலுக்கு

தடபடெனப்படு குட்டுடன் சர்க்கரை மொக்கியகைக்
கடதட கும்பக களிற்றுக் கிளைய களிற்றினையே.

At the northern towers of Arunachaleswara Temple, I shall pray to Vinayaka, who is having sugar and jaggery in his hands
and I shall do dhobhikaranam and seek his blessings to complete this Kandar Alankaram.

This Vinayaka is called Vara Siddhi Vinayaka, after Kambathu Ilayanar Temple.

This is the invocatory verse for Abhirami Ammai Padigam of Abhirami Bhattar:

தூயதமிழ்ப் பாமாலை சூட்டுதற்கு மும்மதம், நால்வாய்,

For making a garland of pure Tamizh verses for Abhirami at Her feet prayed to by devotees, let me first seek the blessings
of Ganesa with three mathams, long hanging mouth and five arms, to whom I pray.

This Vinayaka is called KaLLa vAraNa Piillaiyar.  He is the one who protects the temple of Abhirami from other thief elephants
entering the temple and causing damage.

This is the invocatory verse of Subrahmanya Bharati for his songs of Gods.  (Deiva pAdalgaL)

I seek you and I seek your Grace. This lowly dog might have made many mistakes in composing the poetry.  You remove the
mistakes. Without opening my mouth, in mounam, I seek your blessings of your flowery feet, let me with your blessings,
compose effulgent, fiery Tamizh verses.

The prayer to Sri Vinayaka is not complete with out Avvaiyaar's Vinayakar Ahaval.  This long poem, inter- alia gives the
essence of Yoga Sastra, apart from praying to Sri Vinayaka.  Avvaiyaar is a Vinayaka Upasaki.  The meaning needs a lot
of reading to give correct translation, which I will do later.

This is the invocatory verse on Sri Vinayaka in Kachiappa Sivachariyar's Kanda Puranam:

திகட சக்கரச் செம்முக மைந்துளான்
சகட சக்கரத் தாமரை நாயகன்
அகட சக்கர வின்மணி யாவுறை
விகட சக்கரன் மெய்ப்பதம் போற்றுவாம்.

thikada chakkara should be broken as thigazh dasa kara = i.e. Vinayaka is having 10 arms here!  He is having five coral red
face. He is holding a round, wheel like lotus, or he is sitting on such a lotus.  He is ever present eternally on all stars, suns
and galaxies which constitute a circular universe.  He is vikata i.e humorous and witty.  Let us pray to his Feet.

When the date of breaking the images was announced, the sacred group of SivanaDiyArs--Shiva devotees, in KumbakoNam were upset; they met ShrIShrI PeriyavAL at VETTamangalam and asked him, "What retaliative measure are we to take for this?" To aDiyEn--myself, ShrI PeriyavAL gave a sign in silence and with orders to publish his message in the magazine asking everyone to do pArAyaNam of the "VinAyagar Agaval". An additional order was given to print and distribute freely, the "VinAyagar Agaval" book blessed by AvvaiyAr. A surprising thing about this was that I did not know about the existence of a book called "VinAyagar Agaval". I could not also understand his silent sign indicating AvvaiyAr. Nor could I understand his gestures about the "VinAyagar Agaval" book. Then he wrote the name on the sand and showed it to me. It was night time and there was not enough light from the electric lamp where PeriyavAL was sitting. Then he asked for a slate and chalk to be brought and showed me the name by writing it on the slate. I understood it. Accordingly, the "VinAyagar Agaval" book was printed and distributed freely. All the magazines and newspapers carried PeriyavAL's message to the people to do pArAyaNam--recitation, of the "VinAyagar Agaval". I had the bhAgyam of seeing PeriyavAL's handwriting which was like printed letters.

Friends,

Posting this mail again for the secondtime.

Friends,
May Lord Ganesha bless us with Bhakti and Mukti.

Here is the link to the thread started by our friend Prashant.Greetings to him and all of you on this wonderful Vinayaka chaturthi as we worship and adore this 'Beloved son-god' pillaiyar.
http://www.arunachala-ramana.org/forum/index.php?topic=7168.msg30511#msg30511

I was not sure whether this request was notice by others ,so posting it again. It is very easy to copy what is posted here into that thread and we will have all in one place.
namaskar.

Dear Ravi,

I have already read the matter contained in your post about Maha Periyava's orders to devotees and publishing Vinayakar
Ahaval booklet.  It is amazing how he quietly to resist the attempts of Periyar to break Pillaiyar's idols.

Arunachala Siva.

A Ganesha stotra says: Mushika Vahana Modaka Haste,
which means,
Whose carrier is Mouse, and Who holds Modaka on His Hand.

Other members have written on Sri Ganesha, and I will write on Rat.

One day the disciple sat beneath the banyan tree with a picture of a rat. Beneath that was written: Rats speed up renunciation.

cguru: What is the reason for your admiring the rats and how do they speed up renunciation?

d: I was attached to some useless possessions in my house which I could not throw off. I read the lives of many saints and heard their messages of renunciation; all sounded admirable but could not make me throw off my attached possessions. Then entered rats in my life.

cguru: Then?

d: The rats tore off core parts of my possessions into bits and pieces, and I was forced to throw them off. So what could not happen for several years happened in a few days. So I say: Rats speed up renunciation.

cguru: Jai Sri Ganesh.

In Ganesha and Mudgala Purana, Sri Ganesha is the supreme God. The word "Jyestha" (literally meaning eldest) used in a mantra to invoke Ganapati is interpreted as the first God. All other Gods are created by Him. His play as the son of Shiva is only a play.

Lambodara, literally meaning large belly, signifies that He contains the entire Universe within Him. One of the Puranas related to Ganesha says that Ganesha showed Vishwaroopa to Shiva and Vishnu inside His stomach.

The trunk of Ganesha represents the symbol of Omkara, and He is Mangala Murti, i.e. with an auspicious form. He is Vighnaraja, the best in removing obstacles.

He is "pranamya shirasa devam", the God Who is to be worshipped first.

Jai Sri Ganesh

One of the name of Sri Ganesha is "Shurpakarna", which means Whose Ears are like Fans. Fanning through those ears, Ganesha cools the devotees from the heat of the worldly life.

On the other hand He is "Vakratunda", meaning Who has a curved trunk. Shaped like Omkara, the trunk reminds the devotees of Pranava inside them.  His huge stomach, "Lambodara" reminds of the Vishwaroopa contained within Him.

Thus Ganesha on one hand cools the devotees from the worldly heat by fanning through His ears, on the other hand pours the sound of Pranava in their ears through His trunk.

There is a pun in a sloka on the word "Ekadanta", His single tusk, with the word "Anekadam", i.e. Who gives many things to His devotees. Thus the single tusk of Ganesha gives many things to the devotees.

The same sloka has a pun on the word "Gajanana", His Elephant face with the word "Agajananam"; "Agaja" is a name of Devi Parvati. The Lotus face of Devi Parvati is always on Sri Ganesha. Thus thinking of Sri Ganesha brings the blessings of Devi Parvati also.

Adi Shankara's Ganesha Pancharatnam describes Ganesha as holding the Joy ("Muda") of "Modaka". The Modaka which Sri Ganesha holds represents Divine Joy, which He bestows to His devotees.

So let us contemplate on the auspicious form of  Sri Ganesha and seek His blessings.

Jai Sri Ganesh

Ganapathi Atharva Seersha is a part of Atharva Veda. It is classified as an Upanishad and not as a chant; yet it is still considered universally as the greatest and most effective prayer addressed to Ganesh.

  Aum! O gods,with our ears may we hear that which is auspicious;
Adorable Ones, with our eyes may we see that which is auspicious ;
while praising the gods with steady limbs, may we enjoy the life that
is alloted by the gods. May Indra of ancient fame be auspicious to us;
may Pusan and the Visva-Devas be propitious to us; may Tarksya, of
unhampered movement, be well disposed towards us; may Brihaspati
ensure our welfare.
Aum! Peace! Peace! Peace!
Shanti from Upanishads of Atharva Veda

Now let us explain the Ganapatiathrvashirsha,
The supreme of hority Ganapati (who is the authority of al ganas-Shakti,
Surya, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahmadeva) and who is OM.

  You are the divine truth.
You are the only creator of the world.
You are the only protector of the world.
You are the only destroyer of the world.
You are the ultimate supreme divine power.
You are the only soul which is present party in each and every living form.

Here the meaning of Brahma is related with unknown total universal knowledge.
The origin of the total universe is sound. The first basic sound or knowledge is
self existent, ever lasting and full of happiness, full of spirit. The pictorial form of
this original sound is OM and an idol of Ganapati is a symbolic form of OM. All the
matter is created from the original sound. ( matter is made up of protons, neutrons
and electrons) atoms which are. It means original soul is present partly in each and
everything and it is the ultimate supreme knowledge means it is the Brahma and.
The Brahma(Lord Ganesha) controls from birth till death. [1]

The great sage Ganaka is speaking the divine truth. [2]

protect the donor, protect the sustainer, protect the learner and the teacher.
Protet me from West direction, protect me from East, protect me from North,
protect me from South. Protect me from top, protect me from bottom. Protect
me from all sides and from surrounding. Lord Ganesha you protect me from
all the obstacles when I am praising about your appearance, when I am listening
about your merits/qualities. When I am passing the merit of your worshipping to
others you protect me. When I am learning your worshipping from the Guru you
protect me. The obstacles which will come across in my devotional worshipping
you protect them from East, West, North, South and other surrounding/directions. [3]

You are the real speech and you are the real awakening. You are the real
spirit of joy. You are the real universal divine knowledge. You are the incomparable
everlasting real supreme joy. You are the perceptible/actual divine(substance)
or as cause of the universe or an enigma. You are the actual knowledge and actual
science and intelligence.(the meaning of science is spiritual experience) [4]

The whole world is produced from you. The whole world is exists because of you.
The whole world merged into you. The whole world again one can experience in
only you. You are the Earth, water, air, fire and sky(the panchamahabhutas-the
five elements). You are the four states of speeches. Sounded soul which is the
origin of the Lord Ganesha is the self existent everlasting unexpressed total
universal divine knowledge. The three states creation, maintenance(taking care)
and destruction are originated from Lord Ganesha(Matter is originated from sound.
The protons, neutrons and electrons are made up of atom. Atom is made from matter.)
Proton, the creator(God Brahma), neutron the care-taker(God Vishnu) and electron the
destructer (God Shiva). The five elements are originated from Lord Ganesha. From
Ether the air is originated, from air the fire is originated, from fire the water is
originated, from water the earth is originated. A human being is also originated from
these five elements by processing cosmic energy. Lord Ganesha is the self existent
original sounded soul. The knowledge of sound is visible or invisible. We can hear it but
cannot see or feel it. Lord Ganesha(sound) is soul and the universe is the body. The
source of words are from Lord Ganesha-the original sound. The four states of speeches
are para, pashyanti, madhyama and vaikhari. The place of para is deep down inside the
region of naval. The place of pashyanti is in the heart

The 'Madhyanma' is the throat and 'Vaikhari' is the movement of tongue and lips. It means the presence of Lorf Ganesha(sound) is present in all the objects in the world. [5]

You are beyond the three human qualities(Raj, Satva, Tam) You are beyond the three human states(waking, dreaming and deep sleep)
You are beyond the three states of bodies(gross, stable and causal)
You are constantly exist in the place 'Muladhara' in human body.
You are the three powers/Shakti (required for creation preservation and destruction)
The sages always meditate on Lorf Ganesha. You are Brahma, you are Vishnu, you are Rudra,
you are Indra, you are Agni/God of Fire, you are Vayu/God of Air, you are Surya/Sun, you are
Chandra/Moon, you are the Bramha(an organism from all living being) and the Earth, the Sky,
the Heaven and the OM.

A human beings has three types qualities- Raj, Satva, Tam. Satva means Satvik means pure, holy or God fearing. A peson who is satvik, has always pure, noble clear thoughts. He is always well behaved well mannered thinking for others. Any type of bad element cold disturb him. 'Rajogna' means passionate. A person always thinks about what profit he will get if will do anything. He always accept positive results as per his thinking. If he doesn't achieve it he gets disturb. Could not keep control on his thoughts and mind. 'Tamasi' means hot headed irascible. A person is very hot tempered, selfish, his thoughts and his world is around eating, drinking, sleeping. They hurt to others never think care for anybodies feelings and duties towards anybody. Lorf Ganesha is beyond these three gunas.

Lord Ganesha always exist in place of 'Muladhara' according to the yoga there are seven 'Chakras'(states) in human body. These 'Chakras' are situated in various parts of the body. Through meditation a person can awake the power of thinking of body, correct decision power, through the power of kundalini which is in the 'Muladhara'. Lorf Ganesha the supreme power is situated in 'Muladhara'. [6]

Vinayagar Nanmani Maalai  is by Poet Subramania Barathi [விநாயகர் நான்மணி மாலை] – by some accounts this was published out of handwritten manuscripts in 1929 posthomously.  which has Venba, Kalithurai, Vrutham, and Agaval pieced together brilliantly.

Here is a short piece of the same sung beautifully by Sirgazhi Govindarajan

( The Meaning of the above : In the words of Bharathi, those who are truly devoted would not be impatient and would not do things in a hurry for they know how life grows out steadily out of seed; and for those who are given to understanding the divine power is everything ~ also know that all they need to do is to work with esteem rest being taken by Divine shakthi.  )
