Title: Sattvic curry recipe for lentils or beens
Post by: Jyoti on August 23, 2013, 01:46:32 AM
I'm going to change my diet towards less meat and more sattvic food.
Therefore I would like to know a recipe for a sattvic curry that gives lentils and beens a good taste..
In my country I can buy curry powder in the supermarket - but I doubt that an Indian would recognize that stuff as 'curry'.
I know there are many different recipes, but does one know a simple one which does not require too many different spices?

Try this link for a simple moong dal recipe . This blog also has other recipes ,some bit spicy and some plain sattvic .The writer of this blog is herself a spiritual person and hence most of the dishes will be quite sattvic only . The explanations are quite detailed here with lot of pics in each stage of cooking keeping the beginner in mind .

Dear Jyoti,

You can try to find curry powder in healthy food stores,i am sure they have curry imported from India directly. I am buying one here,Zahul Zest,Madras curry. But it is mix of many spices, which are certainly healthy, but not sure how much sattwic. Anyway,i love this one very much,it have such a good taste, very much different from any curry powder i used. In that store i am buying other spices, which are in carry powder usually, and which are Indian products. I am sure You have them in Your country, but only in such specialised healthy products stores.

With love and prayers,

This is again an excellent website for non onion / non garlic Indian Vegetarian . There is also video tutorials for the recipes here ( it can also be watched on youtube ) . A complete portal for sattvic food .The person who maintains this site is a Jain lady and Jains are very strict in seeing that their food is very sattvic .

Dear Sri Atmavichar,

This is wonderful site, with detailed instructions. Usually something is always missing in those internet recipes, coz they sometimes left out very important things, little ones, which make that dish to be the way suppose to be. This one i like, but i must try and see. I already saw some seemingly very tasty dishes.

Thank You Very much!

With love and prayers,

Dear Jewell

The site given by me ( http://www.manjulaskitchen.com/  (http://www.manjulaskitchen.com/)) is the best that I have come across with regard to Sattvic Cooking .No doubt there are lot of good Indian Cookery sites but they involve lot of use of onions / garlic for added taste but here in this site equally tasty dishes are given without the use of onion / garlic . Of course we need to choose what best works for us . Onions / Garlic have good medicinal properties if used in moderation but if used in excess it will make us more rajasic / tamasic .
I will myself try some of the dishes and share here my inputs later .Others can also do the same .

Dear Sri Atmavichar,

Yes,i need these recipes without garlic or onions, mostly coz Serbian cusine involves using them in big quantities. I dont bother much, honestly about it,coz i can always reduce it when i wish to,and when i have the need to do so. I try to balance my diet. But i needed good sattwic Indian recipes, coz i like Indian dishes very much. They are also very healthy, coz of spices. Which i also love very much.  ;D Unfortunatly,i love hot and tasty food which is not so satwic. And i adore sweets. But i can be disciplined when i wish to. Indian cusine is so good for me coz i also love rice,i could live on it, and many other vegetables which are mostly in indian dishes. Tasty, and sattwic. Is there anything better!

With love and prayers,

I have no hand for cooking.  :-[
When I eat lentils in an Indian restaurant they taste delicious - when I cook them at home they always become starchy.

Dear Jyoti,

They always put some ingredients for which we dont know, and usually they dont say everything when give recipes on the internet too.

Or maybe You cook them too much,or on too high temperature. I never cooked them, but when i cook all other class of beans, little sugar make it softier, and it helps to be cooked faster. Also if You simmer them,it is best to be almost covered and cooked on low temperature, with water just little above them. When You add water, make sure it is hot.
Some put them into the cold water for few hours,so they can be softier too. Then,You cook them like usually. I do that with beans. But,i did not prepared lentils, coz in my country they are not so popular,so i cant say.
I also put always little margarine in vegetables, when it is almost cooked, coz it gives them good aroma. The one which is soft, and have omega 3 oil.

With love and prayers,

Dear Jyotiji and Jewellji,

I like to cook healthy Indian vegetarian food. If you are interested in cooking beans/legumes or lentils using a pressure cooker is the best way to cook them. Soaking the beans in water for a few hours makes them softer and quicker to cook. I try to be mindful in the kitchen and not waste things or gas for cooking like Bhagavan has taught. Brown rice and the legumes(there are many varieties you can try) can be pressure cooked in 10 to 15 minutes.

Please  let me know if you have any specific questions.

Dear Lathaji,

Thank You so much! I certainly have many questions regarding Indian cooking, that i dont know from where to start.  :)

Do You have some good recipe which involves preparing vegetables and rice together, like mix? Not even recipe, but i need some basic rules for dish like that. Which spices to put which are must, etc. I like improvising with food, but i dont know these basic rules,so to say,in Indian cusine.

With love and prayers,

All these websites are lovely. Would you have something for fasting foods like for amavasya, mondays, shivaratri.... for those of us who are not able to do no food no water.

Thanks
