Dear Ramana 1359,

I watched the latest ones mentioned by you, running for about 7 to 15 minutes. One briefly speaks of His life and advent.
The other one about Arunachala. The one speaks about early childhood. All were nice.

Dear Ramana1359,

Wish you a very happy Diwali with more and more Sadhana this year.

I watched all the Google videos excepting the one that runs alone for more than one hour. All of them are excellent.
The youtube videos, excepting one or two, I am yet to watch the remaining.

With my new desktop Acer, it is a pleasure to watch these videos.  They teach us as much as Sri Bhagavan's wonderful
teachings themselves.

Seeing Sri Ramana's photographs themselves is a sadhana, I should say.  Many Westerners had come all the way to
T'malai after seeing the photographs of Sri Bhagavan. In the Souvenir Celebrating the Centenary of the Advent of
Sri Bhagavan - 1896-1996, Dev Gogoi and Graham Boyd have written excellent articles about Photography including
image restoration as a Sadhana.

Dear ramana and others,

I watched Denis Hartel's one hour programme in Google Video, narrating the  complete history of Sri Bhagavan. It is simply
wonderful.  A nicely taken video covering those days of Tiruchuzhi, Madurai and Tiruavannamalai.

Dear Nagaraj,

I am reading a book titled The Unbearable Lightness Of Being by Milan Kundera. The book
first came in 1988. This is a beautiful book against the backdrop of Czech Revolution, crushed
by Russians. The book, throughout runs under stream of philosophy. One catchy observation
by the author is, abanboned child or found out child, in a garden or riverbed, makes history.
If the Pharaoh,s daughter had not snatched the basket carrying little Moses, there would not
have been Old Testament, no civilization of West Asia etc., If Polybus had not been taken in the young
Oedipus, Sophocles would not have been written ..his most beautiful tragedy!

I was thinking, the same can be said of Sita and Andal!

Dear Ramana,

Nice :)

I truly believe, there is one truth, which is nameless, which is theory-less, with is attributeless, which is state-less. One who realises that truth can never see anything as right or wrong, true or false, this or that!

Even whom we call a dvaitin or anybody, even after he realises, he would continue to pray with great fervor! Nothing changes for him.

One who realises, will himself not know it, he would simply continue and just the quest in him would have ended. He is, without any thirst.

Dear ramana,

Kindly tell me what is the use of watching so many youtube videos on various topics, about various religions and faiths,
and about various teachers?  Is it not better to stick to one faith and have one Guru, without brandishing other faiths
and other teachers and their sayings?  Sri Ramakrishna used to tell one story. One farmer went to dig a well. He dug up to
10 feet. No water came. He left that pit and went to dig another well. Again 10 feet. No water.  He lost all interest and remained
thirsty and without water for his agricultural fields, after doing such 10 feet digging at 4 or 5 places. Had he dug at one place,
with perseverance and sustained efforts at one place, in 40 feet, he would have found water. Hence let us stick to one faith,
atma vichara which is the sum and substance of all faiths.

We are not going to write a comparative study of various theologies and teachers.  Our job is to see that we spiritually
progress by adopting a faith that is most suitable to us, and improve steadily.  Is it not?

Dear ramana,

You say you are listening to some songs of other faiths, when you are tired and when you want to remove that weariness.
On the other side, you say you want to follow the practices of Sanatana Dharma and your spiitual progress. There are good
kirtanas praising the gods of Sanatana Dharma also. They are not in English but in Indian languages, like Dohas in Marathi,
Tyagaraja Kirtanas in Telugu, Tamizh songs by Arunagiri Nathar, Sri Bhagavan, and Nayanmars and Azhwars. A few of them
are available in youtube and most of them are in CDs.  By listening to them, your pastime for removing the tiredness and also
your spiritual progress will be in unison. Of course Vedic hymns should not be listened through CDs. They must be listened from
live recitation.  Other hymns are okay.

Dear ramana,

Sanatana Dharma is all embracing. However since Jesus and Mohammad gave a separate name for their faiths, it is excluded from
Sanatana Dharma.  When the son has disowned his father, how can father call him his son?  Or when a wife has divorced her
husband, how can the husband call her his wife?

Jesus did not give a name to "his" faith. His followers did that. Read the symbols of the Gospels and the beautiful mystical sayings of Jesus with an open heart and forget what his "followers" codified into dogma.
Jesus was not some errant redheaded step-child when it comes to Santana Dharma.
He lived it, he taught it, and did so in such a powerful and uplifting way that 2,000 yrs. later He is still showing people the way to God and performing miracles. Many when they come close to death see God or Self as Jesus and/or identify the Light of the Self as Jesus or Christ - at least in the culture where I come from where He is predominant.
My grandmother was healed by Him when she was dying during the American flu epidemic of 1917-1919 and remained a lifelong devotee. She was holier and more devoted than I am.
That said, the best commentaries on Jesus I have ever seen have come from Hindu teachers. The Sermon on the Mount commentary by Swami Probhavananda is fantasitc.
The single best is the exhaustive commentary on the Gospels by Paramahansa Yogananda.

Dear Astralman,

I have no quarrel against Jesus Christ.  As you correctly said, it is his followers who made into a different faith and said that unless
you follow Christianity, you will not get salvation.  If Jesus had been alive, when British started ruling countries like India, he would
not have permitted "conversion" from Hinduism to Christianity, luring the people with money and free education.  Whereas much against
Jesus' Will, missionaries started converting Hindus into Christians.  This made the split felt more and more between Hinduism and Christianity.  All great Saints have said the same teachings to humankind for their upliftment and salvation. So there is no surprise in
the Sermon of the Mount being similar to Hindu thought.  What Jesus said from Mount of Sinai is the same as what Sri Bhagavan said
from Arunachala or what Rishis of India said from the Himalayas.

Hinduism never converted people of other faith into Hinduism. That is why it is called Sanatana Dharma, an all embracing faith, ancient
and primordial. In fact Buddha is considered  as an avatara of Narayana in Srimad Bhagavatam.

All fissures between religions are by lower rung people, whose ego is not subsided.

Dear Subramanian Sir,

What Jesus said from Mount of Sinai is the same as what Sri Bhagavan said

Hinduism never converted people of other faith into Hinduism. That is why it is called Sanatana Dharma, an all embracing faith, ancient

All fissures between religions are by lower rung people, whose ego is not subsided.

precisely, that is the real problem. These are the problems created by "followers" That is the same issue with all religions including ours!

Sir, even in the name of Sanathana Dharma, there are many new modern day Gurus who lure people to them. I feel, this is not any different from Christians converting Hindus!

I felt it most appropriate to say that Sanathana Dharma never converted people of other faith over saying Hinduism never converted people of other faith. As the term Hindusim is relatively new, just coined by Britishers over last 2 centuries perhaps! And What we call Hindusim is quite different from the true spirit of Sanathana Dharma.

Especially, today, there is no relevance in calling Hinduism as Sanathana Dharma. It is mostly referred as Hinduism, which is no different from Christianity, Islam! We can't refer Hindu's as Sanathana Dharma anymore!

In the name of Allah, Jesus and Krishna, Ramana Maharshi, Adi Shankara, Ramakrishna, Chinmayananda and many of other religions are coming up their own TV channels, all these are dangerous precedents! A huge business is building over! and Allah, Jesus and Krishna and others are surely not responsible for that!

The evil effects of Kali Yuga is already predicted in Srimad Bhagavatam http://www.prabhupadanugas.eu/?p=11939 (http://www.prabhupadanugas.eu/?p=11939)

The truth is one and the same irrespective of the ways. In fact, those who are able to see this, are in a way, a rebellion to their own religions! a deeply spiritual persons is dangerous to the society, which is full of ideas!

Dear Nagaraj,

I see your point.  The fight in today's context, is one where Gurus attract to join them as their disciples.  There are many bogus gurus\
also.  But all gurus bogus or genuine are only in Hinduism and there is no conversion.  There may be some small amount of conversion
in villages and far off areas like Nagaland where Christians still work for conversion.

In this context, I wish to point out only peculiar conversion which was there in and around Sri Rangam area in Tamizh Nadu.
There some Sri Vaishanva Saints were asking Smarthas (Sankara's followers) to join Sri Vaishnavism.  In Tiruchirapalli, where I studied
and which is near Sri Rangam, I know some persons who were Smarthas earlier in the earlier generation but have become Sri
Vaishnavas now!  We used to call them as Iyer by Iyengars.  I think even this must have stopped now.

Sir,

I kindly disagree on vedic chanting cds.  For people like me,  live recitation is vary rare.  But I really find solace in playing the vedic cds especially in the mornigns,  when my house becomes a temporary Ramansramam and the faces of Bhagavan and Saradamma's photos seem to shine with greater splendour and bliss.

Sometimes I get some mild laughters and seems something within me resonates and say 'yes', 'yes' to the chantings.  So now I am sort of addicted to the morning 'moods' that I create in weekends after copying it from our Maharishee's abode.

I had spoken to veda prasara samithi and they told it is  ok with playing but only exception was they asked to light a lamp,  be bathed and do some meditation or sit & listen as they are played.

Sabhda is eternal.  In Kali yuga,  it repeats in the recorded CDs.  It is the humble mind that matters.

Dear ramana,

There is one video prepared by Dennis Hartel and David Godman, in 1983, containing an interview of Annamalai Swami
by one westerner, with Sundaram Swami, as an interpreter. This runs for about an hour fifteen minutes.    David Godman
announced it and sold it through his blog. It was at a concessional price of Rs 125.00. I am not sure whether this DVD
is now available. I do not know whether the youtube interview is the same as that of Dennis Hartel.

Friends,
Please find links to the wonderful movie Vireswar Vivekananda. This was taken in 1963 as part of the Birth centenary celebrations .The movie is in black and white and is in Bengali-The actors have done a wonderful job knowing that it is not easy to bring to the screen the utter innocence and childlike charm of Sri Ramakrishna and the Fiery, multisided Narendra(Swamiji). Here are the links:
part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYjhmBoSQlA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYjhmBoSQlA)

part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGawTJLI5Ks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGawTJLI5Ks)

It requires familiarity with the lives and atleast some knowledge of hindi. For those who do not know language or the story,I will describe briefly the Part 2 Sequence:
1.Sri Ramakrishna smoking his hookah, enquires his nephew Ramlal-Why Naren has not come?It is quite since he came.I want to see him,I am finding it very difficult having not seen him.I badly want to see him.
Ramlal says that Naren has been informed but he has not come.
Sri Ramakrishna decides to visit Naren' s House.

In Naren's home, narendra is studying. His friends visit him.Naren tells them :I have two vision before me-One is that I will become a successful man with Plenty of Money ,Weath,Honour ,Fame, etc.
The Other vision is that I will become a 'Renunciant' renouncing everything and become a mendicant.
As they are discussing thus,Sri Ramakrishna arrives with Ramlal in tow and with sweets for naren. He comes calling-LOREN,LOREN(This is the colloquial name with which he used to call Naren). He feeds Naren with a sweet and says-"How long you have not come to dakshineswar! How long since I have heard your singing. Please sing one song...one song".
Naren sings this song:-Jago mA kula Kunalini'-Means:
Awake, Mother! Awake! How long Thou hast been asleep
In the lotus of the Muladhara!
Fulfil Thy secret function, Mother:
Rise to the thousand-petalled lotus within the head,
Where mighty Siva has His dwelling;
Swiftly pierce the six lotuses
And take away my grief, O Essence of Consciousness!

Sri Ramakrishna is in samadhi.Coming back to the plane of the senses,he expresses appreciation for Narendra and Pleads with Narendra-:Please come to Dakshineswar,Won't you! Please come to Dakshineswar,Please"!
Naren is moved and says 'Yes'.
Narendra then goes and tells his mother:'Master has called me to Dakshineswar.I am going'.
Naren's mother tells him-'Dakshineswar,Dakshineswar.That madcap thakur! We are in penury.Thakur(Master)knows God.Why do you not ask him to talk to God and bring some relief to us'.
Naren goes to Sri Ramakrishna .The Master is very happy -He calls one of the devotees and tells him-'Go and tell your Mother(Holy Mother)that Naren has come!Ask her to make good Rotis!(Bread). He calls another person and tells him-'Naren's family is in difficulty. Why don't you talk to someone to get help him'
Naren hears the conversation and scolds Sri ramakrishna:'Why are you doing this by speaking about my difficulty! We have our honour".
He tells Sri Ramakrishna to speak to kali about his difficulty.Ramakrishna tells him-'Why do you not ask her'.He sends Naren to the kali Temple.
Naren goes to the temple and a firm faith seizes him.He behelds the Divine Mother,Living and ready to Grant any boon!.He forget what he went for and asks for Viveka,Vairagya,Jnana and Bhakti and then comes back to sri Ramakrishna.
sri Ramakrishna asks him-'What did you ask the boon from Divine Mother'?
Naren says:I forgot to ask!
Sri Ramakrishna sends him again.naren Goes and again asks only Viveka, vairagya ,Bhakti and Jnana. He returns to Sri Ramakrishna and when the Master asks him whether he asked mother for relief from suffering,Naren Tells him:'No,I felt ashamed at ask .I asked only for Viveka, vairagya ,Bhakti and Jnana'.
The Master is highly pleased and blesses him saying -Your people will not have want of food and simple living.
Narendra then asks master to sing a song-'Ma you are tAra'.
on it goes...Sri Ramakrishna is diagnosed as suffering from cancer....Narendra becomes Swami vivekananda....

Nagaraj,
I bought that DVD.I found it totally insipid! These things have to be produced by people with genuine devotion.'Technology' and 'Information' can only produce caricatures!Sorry,it is a strong criticism but this is what it is.I put in my comments to R K Mutt as well.
If you had bought something that is not useful, one can atleast give it to someone who may find it eseful. In this case,I decided to keep it with me so that I do not unwittingly dispirit someone and bring down swamiji in their estimation.

Namaskar.

Dear i

only after posting the link here, i saw that you had already left a comment in the link itself. I have been having an eye on this video, wanting to buy. Thank you for your feedback. Yes, sometimes, such videos leave one with a sense of dissatisfaction, if it fails to capture the intensity of the character, being tried to show in the movie.

i am sure, the previous links b/w movie carries a stronger spirit and the beauty which can seldom be found in current day movies.

i do like watching movies as well. I, especially like to watch kamal haasans movies (He doesn't make movies just for the heck of it)

Movie making is an art. GV Iyer, AP Nagarajan were stalwarts at that.

Nagaraj,
Sure, the Black and white film 'bireswar Vivekananda' is inspirational. The actors have done a Great job.The Music is wonderful-The songs are absolutely top class and from the Original kathamrita. No one can hold a candle to these Bengalis when it comes to sheer intensity in singing-They are truly gifted and put their heart and soul.
This movie captures the utter simplicity and charm of sri Ramakrishna;Swamiji also gets a good presentation.

Dear Nagaraj,

Yesterday was Sri Sankara Jayanti,. The Sankara TV showed abhishekam for Adi Sankara by the present pontiff. Then he gave
Adi Sankaracharya Brithu (title) to Swami Dayananda Saraswati for latter's excellent exposition of Sankara's teachings. Nochur
Venkataraman also spoke briefly about Atma Vidya. Then one I-pad was released for sale covering Sankara's various feats in
His life. A website has also been launched describing the present pontiff's dik vijaya.  The function took place in Tirunelveli.

Sankara was born on Ardra Star. Sri Bhagavan was born on Punarvasu Star. Sankara was born on Chaitra Sukla Panchami.

Dear i,

it is a beautifully made film. i had been to Kalady, recently, it is truly a beautiful place. i had the opportunity to visit the street where Sri Adi Shankara lived and played, was also blessed to visit the Kula Deiva (family deity) temple Sri Krishna of Sri Shankara. We also saw the house where he sung the famous Kanakadhara Stotram. Kerala temples are unique and how much connection with nature. The river, cool breeze, the greenery, all are beautiful. Kerala is naturally blessed with this heart of prakriti (nature). Truly, it is Gods own country :)

Also, we saw the Wadakanathan Siva temple, where his father, Sivaguru and mother Aryamba prayed for a baby by observing Vratha and we also saw the (Karpillykavu?) Shiva temple where Sivaguru was a priest.

Dear Nagaraj,

Nice photographs about Kaladi and Sri Sanakara's  house.  There is also one house, where a poor brahmin lady gave Him
an old amla fruit as bhiksha since she had nothing else at home to give bhiksha. She was utterly poor. Sri Sankara
composed  Kanakadara Stotram on Lakshmi and golden amla fruits showered on the portico of the house. This small
house is called Swarnathu Illam (Golden House) even today.  The house is almost dilapidated but the name stands even
today. When my wife went to Kaladi with her guru, she saw these places and also the Poorna River and Vadakku Natha
Swami temple, a Siva temple, where Aryamba had vision that Siva Himself would be born as her son.

Ramana/Friends,
Wonderful and  moving documentary. It just reminds us the Great verse in Tirukkural(verse 466):
செய்தக்க அல்ல செயக்கெடும் செய்தக்க
செய்யாமை யானும் கெடும்.

This verse tells us that we are responsible not only for what we do,but also responsible forwhat we do not which we ought to be doing!

Truly it fills our heart with sadness when we find these brothers languishing behind bars and longing to go home and lead a purposeful life.In some way,we have contributed to this state of affairs and are responsible for it.It is heartening to learn that there are some noble ones who have felt the need to carry the life giving message of the spirit into these dark corridors of Human civilization and are earnestly striving to bring about change in the way we handle those who are less fortunate.God bless them all.

Namaskar.

Hari,
Father Keating's talk is interesting but I find that he is also carried away by a mix of 'ideas'.I just happened to find his conversation with the Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.The Rabbi,it seems to me is asking the Fundamental question-'How is Consciousness conscious? That puts one in the Presence of God'.He also cuts Keating short when he tries to suggest that Christianity and Judaism are in a unique position when it comes to the 'Personal'God!(???);Interestingly the Rabbi talks about the 'spousal Relationship with God'-This is called Madhura Bhava in Sanatana Dharma. The Rabbi ,to me ,seems to be quite a deep person and much more universal.

Sri Ravi, very interesting. For everyone's surprise christianity is one of the most, if not the most conservative religion. So don't be surprised. That's why that for a christian is very difficult to embrace the reality when he/she cannot accept that everything is God/Reality. For christians always duality exists - God/Satan, good/bad, christians/pagans, heaven/hell, redemption/sin etc. Only some so called christian mystics don't accept this duality but they don't accept monistic non-duality either, for them the final step is eternal communion with God, e.g. eternal existence of the ego, however purified. Interesting about judaism is that literal reading of its Scripture (Old Testament of the Bible) makes it very violent and further intolerant, much more than christianity but jews are one of the most open-minded people among the followers of the abrahamic religions (christianity, judaism and islam).

Hari/jewel/friends,
This Bhajan was posted by a devotee,Peter in David's Blog.It is wonderfully composed and rendered by Krishna das,a western devotee of Sri Neem Karoli Baba.
Here is the song from his CD album'Heart as wide as the World':
7. By Your Grace / Jai Gurudev (7:17)

Closer than breath, you are the air
Sweeter than life itself, you are here
I am a wanderer, you are my peace
I am a prisoner, you are release

Jai Gurudev...

I am a pilgrim, your road so long
I am the singer, you are the song
Held in the open sky, so far above
I am the lover, you are the love

Jai Gurudev...

I follow your footsteps through the flame
All that I ever need is in your name
Carry your heart in mine, vast as space
All that I am today is by your grace.
 By your Grace...
 I live by your grace.

4. Heart as Wide as the World / Shri Ram Jai Ram (8:21)

Holding me in your arms’ vast embrace
Only love shining in endless space
All I need is to be with you
All my prayers have been heard
All I want is to rest inside
Your heart as wide as the world

I looked away
Your beauty too much to bear
 Where could I run?
 Your eyes,
 I found them everywhere
All I want is to sing to you
The song that no one has heard
All my life has lead me to
A heart as wide as the world

Shree Raam Jai Raam Jai Jai Raam

Beautiful, dear Jewell. Only to add the meaning of hallelujah. It is from Hebrew "hallelu" means "praise"m yah is Jehova. So it means "Praise Jehova (Lord)". So hallelujah is very sacred word, like Amen.

Dear Jewell,

Nice. You have put efforts and understood the meaning of that beautiful song. Once a sakti upasaka Sambandhandan
called for a debate with Arunagiri Nathar. He said: I shall show Devi coming with my mantras and stotrams in presence of
all here including the King Prabdbudevaraja. Can you show Muruga? Sambandhan then started., But Devi did not come.
Arunagiri Nathar started. But Sambandhandan with his mantric powers prevented Muruga, the child, not coming out of the
lap of Devi. Finally Arunagiri Nathar sang this dance song. He says: Everyone is dancing. Why not you also come in peacock
and dance?

Then Muruga comes on his peacock and danced. All witnessed including the King!

vandhE mAtharam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFvXvU9jxwg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFvXvU9jxwg)

Here is the translation in prose of the above two stanzas rendered by Sri Aurobindo Ghose. This has also been adopted by the Government of India's national portal

The original Vande Mataram consists of six stanzas and the translation in prose for the complete poem by Shri Aurobindo appeared in Karmayogin, 20 November 1909.

vande mātaram
sujalāṃ suphalāṃ
malayajaśītalām
śasya śyāmalāṃ
mātaram
vande mātaram

śubhra jyotsnā
pulakita yāminīm
phulla kusumita
drumadalaśobhinīm
suhāsinīṃ
sumadhura bhāṣiṇīm
sukhadāṃ varadāṃ
mātaram
vande mātaram

I show gratitude to thee, Mother,
richly-watered, richly-fruited,
cool with the winds of the south,
dark with the crops of the harvests,
The Mother!

Her nights rejoicing in the glory of the moonlight,
her lands clothed beautifully with her trees in flowering bloom,
sweet of laughter, sweet of speech,
The Mother, giver of boons, giver of bliss.

Apart from the above prose translation, Sri Aurobindo also translated Vande Mataram into a verse form known as Mother, I Bow to Thee.

Sri Aurobindo commented thus on his English translation of the poem:[7]

“   It is difficult to translate the National Song of India into verse in another language owing to its unique union of sweetness, simple directness and high poetic force.   ”

Guhai Namasivayar

I will no longer bear this delusive body, which is the dwelling place of all the 360 diseases known to our science. Lord Arunesan, who wears in his locks the holy waters and the waning moon! May you wipe out at once this birth for the sake of your solitary devotee… We have found refuge at the feet of our father, Lord Sonagiri. We have crossed the threefold waters of our final birth. Behold! No longer do we bow down to the lotus-born Brahma, the creator, nor to Yama [the god of death] who rides the powerful buffalo.

O Mother Unnamulai

O Mother Unnamulai, you are the only support for me.
I, the worst sinner, have no other support than you.
Please bear with my mistakes and sins. Even if you decide
to punish me a little bit, how can I bear it? Is it dharma for you?

O Mother Unnamulai, I do not chant anything other than
Shiva’s name, the god who consumed poison from the milky ocean.
I have not gone through the ways of my senses. Why then
do you punish me, mother, the substance of all Vedas.
Do not hate me lest I am lost.

O Mother Unnamulai, Who else is there excepting you as
my refuge? How can a mother fail to take care of the child
born to her? Who else is my mother, other than you?

O Mother Unnamulai, I am also a slave, like you to Shiva,
Annamalai. Do not forsake me. While Annamalai is the support
for the world and you are his wife and I am your son, is it not?

Hymn to Unnamulai, the consort of Lord Shiva Annamalai by Guhai Namasivaya

Do not pursue the past. Do not lose yourself in the future.
The past no longer is. The future has not yet come.
Looking deeply at life as it is in the very here and now,

Jewell,
How right you are!The compositions are called Abhangs and The Mahratti Singing Style is simply wonderful ,has a manly vigour and  sprightly rhythm-The Abhangs of these Saints are a wonderful blend of Jnana ,Bhakti,Vairagya and Viveka. The subtitles in this movie will help one to follow the story and enjoy it.

Here is an Excerpt from 'Spiritual stories as Told by Ramana maharshi':
TOTAL ABIDANCE
A devotee asked, “How does the repetition of the name of God help Realisation?” Sri Bhagavan replied, “The original name is always going on spontaneously without any
effort on the part of the individual. That name is aham – ‘I’. But when it becomes manifest it manifests as ahamkara – the ego. The oral repetition of the name leads one to mental repetition which finally resolves itself into the eternal vibration. The mind or the mouth cannot act without the Self.” Thereupon Sri Bhagavan told the following story.
TUKARAM, THE GREAT Maharashtra Saint, used to remain in samadhi in the day and sing and dance at night with large crowds of people. He always used to utter the name of Sri Rama. Once he was answering the call of nature and also saying “Ram, Ram”. An orthodox priest was shocked at the uttering of the holy name by the saint when his body was not clean. Hence he reprimanded him and ordered him to be silent. Tukaram said,
“All right!” and remained mute. But at once there arose the name of Rama from every pore of Tukaram and the priest was horrified by the din. He then prayed to Tukaram, “Restrictions are only for the common people and not for saints like you.”

Namaskar.

Dear Sri Ravi,

How wonderful story! How much we can learn from them, and from the Great Saints like Saint Tukaram was. All wisdom is contained in these sweet poems, that it touches our Souls so deeply, and we even dont notice how great and deep impact they have. So much devotion, love and longing... Absolute madness and surrender..sweet madness...

Indeed, the music is beautiful,i like it very much.

Thank You so much, dear Sir,for sharing it,and this, truly impressive story!

How wonderful, wonderful movie about Saint Dyaneshwar! It is absolutely breathtaking! I am so impressed with it. Tears,laugh,tears,laugh... It is full with Divine emotion, such a beautiful lessons and wisdom. And such a touching, touching life story!

I love these old movies. Even bad guys in them are presented in some funny, humorous way,and some gentleness is in them generally... Believe me,two hours passed so fast, that i did not even noticed. And  the songs, the songs are beautiful. They are calling us to sing with them.

I enjoyed even more, coz i wanted to know more about Great Dyaneshwar.

Thank You soooo much for it,and for this movie about Saint Tukaram! He is next in my planner.  :)

Jewell,
Yes,the lives of these Great Saints are a perennial source of inspiration.Just contemplating their lives and teachings ,especially when they are in song form are an easy form of Sadhana. You are quite right in that, these old movies have a charm and how even 'Bad guys' are represented in a humourous and funny way.

Dear Sri Ravi,

How wonderful songs! There is so much power in them, words cannot describe it. Words, music, singers, are so beautiful.

Tukaram was such a Great Soul. I even did not realised how Great. I knew His poems, but nothing about His life. It was full of miracles. Beautiful indeed...
And through that link You have posted, about their life,is very useful for me. There are some which i love very much, and about which i have read already, but about many others i dont know anything,or just their work.

Dear Sir,thank You Very much for this! It is pure gold!

With love and prayers,

Absolutely wonderful, wonderful Lost satsang with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. This is part i like, but there are other parts as well. It is such perfect experience to watch Maharaj like this. Even when He is angry He is soooooo sweet. And how He laughs. Beautiful!  :)
There is a Compassion and Love behind every word of Him.(http://files.specktra.net/smilies/images/smilies/heart.gif)

I only cannot understand translator. It seems like he is not translating exact Maharaj words, coz i think original words are on the screen.

One absolutely wonderful story about Serbian monk whos best friends are wolf, black crow, eagle and fox. He is monk in one very old monastir on Javor mountain in Serbia, where lives very few people. He talks how wild animals are in complete harmony with nature, and how is very easy to approach them if you are in tune with nature and respect her laws. He says that only with purity and honesty you can communicate with nature. Also,he said,it is very important to give them freedom, and that he is learning from them what means to truly love, without being possesive. Monk's name is Father Amvrosije and he is 28 years old.
The Church and Monastir are very old, dating 12CE,and it was used for monk's meditation and rigorous practice.
I watched other movie, which is too long, with him,in summer time, where crow is following him like a puppy. This is taken in winter time. Interesting fact, that all his animal friends are friends with eachother. I:) Soooo beautiful! Video is in Serbian, but pictures are saying more then words...

Title: Samskrut - A Historical Sense
Post by: Nagaraj on September 04, 2013, 12:53:45 PM
I had come to Sanskrit in search of roots, but I had not expected to have that need met so directly. I had not expected my wish for a ‘historical sense’ to be answered with linguistic roots.

Aged twenty-seven or so, when I first began to study Sanskrit as a private student at Oxford, I knew nothing about the shared origins of Indo-European languages. Not only did I not know the example given in my textbook—that the Sanskrit ãrya, the Avestan airya, from which we have the modern name Iran, and the Gaelic Eire, all the way on the Western rim of the Indo-European belt, were all probably cognate—I don’t even think I knew that word, ‘cognate’. It means ‘born together’: co + natus. And natus from gnascor is cognate with the Sanskrit root jan from where we have janma and the Ancient Greek gennaõ, ‘to beget’. Genesis, too.

And in those early days of learning Sanskrit, the shared genesis of these languages of a common source, spoken somewhere on the Pontic steppe in the third millennium BC, a source which had decayed and of which no direct record remains, absorbed me completely. Well, almost completely. The grammar was spectacularly difficult and, in that first year, it just kept mushrooming—besides three genders, three numbers and eight cases for every noun, there were several classes of verbs, in both an active and middle voice, each with three numbers and three persons, so that in just the present system, with its moods and the imperfect, I was obliged to memorise 72 terminations for a single verb alone.

And still I found time to marvel at how the Sanskrit vid, from where we have vidiã, was related to the Latin videre—to see—from where, in turn, we have such words as video and vision; veda too, of course, for as Calasso writes in Ka, the ancient seers, contrary to common conception, did not hear the Vedas, they saw them! Or that kãla, Time and Death, should be derived from the Sanskrit kãl, ‘to calculate or enumerate’—related to the Latin kalendarium, ‘account book’, the English calendar—imparting, it seemed to me, onto that word the suggestive notion that at the end of all our calculations comes Death. Almost as if kãla did not simply mean Time, but had built into it the idea of its passage, the count of days, as it were.

These thrills were so self-evident that I did not stop to ask what lay behind them. But one day, a few months into my second term, the question was put to me by a sympathetic listener. An old editor at Penguin. I was in London assailing him over dinner, as I now am you, with my joy at having discovered these old threads, when he stopped me with: But what is this excitement? What is the excitement of discovering these old roots?

An oddly meta question, it should be said, oddly self- referential, and worthy of old India. For few ancient cultures were as concerned with the how and why of knowing as ancient India. And what my editor was saying was, you have the desire to know, fine—you have jijñãsa, desiderative of jña: ‘to know’—but what is it made of? What is this hunting about for linguistic roots? What comfort does this knowledge give? And, what, as an extension, can it tell us about our need for roots, more generally? It was that most basic of philosophical enquiries: why do we want to know the things we want to know?

+++
I grew up in late 20th century India, in a deracinated household. I use that word keeping in mind that racine is 'root' in French, and that is what we were: people whose roots had either been severed or could no longer be reached. A cultural and linguistic break had occurred, and between my grandparents’ and my parents’ generation, there lay an imporous layer of English education that prevented both my father in Pakistan, and my mother, in India, from being able to reach their roots. What the brilliant Sri Lankan art critic, Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, had seen happening around him already in his time had happened to us (and is, I suppose, happening today all over India).

‘It is hard to realize,’ Coomaraswamy writes in The Dance of Shiva, ‘how completely the continuity of Indian life has been severed. A single generation of English education suffices to break the threads of tradition and to create a nondescript and superficial being deprived of all roots—a sort of intellectual pariah who does not belong to the East or the West.’

This is an accurate description of what we were. And what it meant for me, personally, as an Indian writer getting started with a writing career in India, was that the literary past of India was closed to me. The Sanskrit commentator, Mallinatha, working in 14th century Andhra, had with a casual ‘iti-Dandin: as Dandin says’, been able to go back seven or eight hundred years into his literary past. I could go back no further than fifty or sixty. The work of writers who had come before me, who had lived and worked in the places where I lived and worked today, was beyond reach. Their ideas of beauty; their feeling for the natural world; their notion of what it meant to be a writer, and what literature was—all this, and much more, were closed to me. And, as I will explain later, this was not simply for linguistic reasons.

I was—and I have TS Eliot in mind as I write this—a writer without a historical sense. Eliot who, in Tradition and the Individual Talent, describes the ‘historical sense’ as: a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence; the historical sense, he feels, compels a man to write not merely with his own generation in his bones, but that [for him]—I’m paraphrasing now—the whole literature of Europe from Homer onwards to that of his own country has ‘a simultaneous existence’.

My problem was that I had next to nothing in my bones. Nothing but a handful of English novels, some Indian writing in English, and a few verses of Urdu poetry. That was all. And it was too little; it left the bones weak; I had no way to thread the world together.

The place I grew up in was not just culturally denuded, but—and this is to be expected, for we can only value what we have the means to assess—it held its past in contempt. Urdu was given some token respect—though no one really bothered to learn it—but Sanskrit was actively mocked and despised. It was as if the very sound of the language had become debased. People recoiled from names that were too Sanskritic, dismissing them as lower class: ‘Narindar,’ someone might say, ‘what a driver’s name!’ They preferred Armaan and Zhyra and Alaaya. The Sanskrit teacher in most elite schools was a figure of fun. And people took great joy at having come out of a school, such as The Doon School, say, without having learnt any more Sanskrit than a derisive little rhyme about flatulence.

What was even more dismaying was that very few people in this world regarded Sanskrit as a language of literature. In fact, Sanskrit, having fought so hard historically to escape its liturgical function and become a language of literature and statecraft, had in the India I grew up been confined once again to liturgy. And an upper-class lady, on hearing that you were learning Sanskrit, would think nothing of saying: ‘Oh, I hate all that chanting-shanting.’

Sanskrit was déclassé; it was a source of embarrassment; its position in our English-speaking world reminded me of the VS Naipaul story of the boy among the mighty Mayan ruins of Belize. ‘In the shadow of one such ruin,’ Naipaul writes in The Enigma of Arrival, ‘a Mayan boy (whatever his private emotions) giggled when I tried to talk to him about the monument. He giggled and covered his mouth; he seemed to be embarrassed. He was like a person asking to be forgiven for the absurdities of long ago…’

+++
To have Sanskrit in India was to know an equal measure of joy and distress. On the one hand, the language was all around me and things that had once seemed closed and inert came literally to be full of meaning. ‘Narindar’ might have sounded downmarket to the people I had grown up with, but it could no longer be that way for me. Not when I knew that beyond its simple meaning as ‘Lord of Men’, nara—cognate with the Latin nero and the Greek anér—was one of our oldest words for ‘man’. Some might turn their nose up at a name like Aparna, say, preferring a Kaireen or an Alaaya, but not me. Not when it was clear that parna was ‘leaf’, cognate with the English ‘fern’, and aparna, which meant ‘leafless’, was a name Kalid ¯a sa had himself given Paravati: ‘Because she rejected, gracious in speech though she was, even the high level of asceticism that is living only on leaves falling from trees of their own accord, those who know the past call her Aparna, the Leafless Lady.’

My little knowledge of Sanskrit made the walls speak and nothing was the same again. Words and names that had once seemed whole and complete—such as Anuja and Ksitaja—broke into their elements. I saw them for what they were: upapada compounds, which formed the most playful and, at times, playfully profound compounds. Anuja, because it meant ‘born after’, or ‘later’, was a name often given to the youngest son of a family. And ksitaja, which meant ‘born of the earth’—the ja being a contraction of jan, that ancient thread for birthing, begetting and generating—could be applied equally to an insect and a worm as well as the horizon, for they were both earth-born. And dvi|ja, twice born, could mean a Brahmin, for he is born, and then born again when he is initiated into the rites of his caste; it could mean ‘a bird’, for it is born once when it is conceived and then again from an egg; but it could also mean ‘a tooth’, for teeth, it was plain to see, had two lives too.

So, yes: once word and meaning were reunited, a lot that had seemed ordinary, under the influence of the world I grew up in, came literally to acquire new meaning. Nor did the knowledge of these things seem trifling to me, not simply a matter of curiosity, not just pretty baubles. Because the way a culture arrived at its words, the way it endowed sabda with artha, gave you a picture of its values, of its belief system, of the things it held sacred.

Consider, for instance, sarıra or ‘body’. One of its possible derivations is from √srr, which means ‘to break’ or ‘destroy’, so that sarıra is nothing but ‘that which is easily destroyed or dissolved.’ And how could one know that without forming a sense of the culture in which that word emerged and how it regarded the body? The body, which, as any student of John Locke will tell you (1), had so different a significance in other cultures.

I thought it no less interesting to observe the little jumps of meaning a root made as it travelled over the Indo-European belt. Take vertere, ‘to turn’, from the old Latin uortere: we have it in Sanskrit too: vrt, vartate: ‘to turn, turn round, revolve, roll; to be, to live, to exist, to abide and dwell’. It is related to the German werden—‘to become’. From where we have the Old English wyrd—‘fate, destiny’; but also werde: ‘death’. That extra layer of meaning restored, it was impossible ever to think of Shakespeare’s ‘weird sisters’ from Macbeth in the same way again.

What Sanskrit did for me was that it laid bare the deep tissue of language. The experience was akin to being able to see beneath the thick encroachment of slum and shanty, the preserved remains of a grander city, a place of gridded streets and sophisticated sewage systems, of magnificent civic architecture. But to go one step further with the metaphor of the ruined city, it was also like seeing Trajan’s forum as spolia on people’s houses. The language was there, but it was unthought-of, unregarded, hardly visible to the people living among it: there as remains, and little more. There are few places in the world where the past continues into the present as seamlessly as it does in India, and where people are so unaware of it.

Neither is the expectation of such an awareness an imposition of the present on the past. Nor is it an import from elsewhere; not—to use the Academic’s word—etic, but deeply emic to India. For it is safe to say that no ancient culture thought harder about language than India, no culture had better means to assess it. Nothing in old India went unanalysed; no part of speech was just a part of life, no word just slipped into usage, and could not be accounted for. This was the land of grammar and grammarians. And, if today, in that same country, men were without grammar, without means to assess language, it spoke of a decay that could be measured against the standards of India’s own past.

That decay—growing up with as little as I had—was what lay behind my need for roots and the keenness of my excitement at discovering them. It was the excitement, at a time when my cultural life felt thin and fragmentary, of glimpsing an underlying wholeness, a dream of unity, that we human beings never quite seem able to let go of. But there was something else. In India, where history had heaped confusion upon confusion, where everything was shoddy and haphazard and unplanned, the structure of Sanskrit, with its exquisite planning, was proof that it had not always been that way. It was like a little molecule of the Indian genius, intact, and saved in amber, for a country from which the memory of genius had departed.

This picture is from an article called "The Rescuing Hug".
The article details the first week of life of a set of twins. Each were in their respective incubators and one was not expected to live.
A hospital nurse fought against the hospital rules and placed the babies in one incubator.
When they were placed together, the healthier of the two, threw an arm over her sister in an endearing embrace.
The smaller baby's heart stabilized and temperature rose to normal.

Friends,
You may like to watch this very instructive and interesting video on Vedic chanting-Lecture cum Demo in 2 parts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7s8XWCguoo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7s8XWCguoo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9mSJ809as8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9mSJ809as8)
This will give a clear idea as to what is the discipline, Rigor and concentration that is required to chant the Vedas.Quite often we come across someone who glibly asks -Why should only Brahmins chant the vedas? Why not others?
After going through this video, one may get an inkling of the intricacies involved.
Please also do not miss how the letter 'saraswati' has to be pronounced and also the definition of who a 'Sudra' is.
Namaskar.

Friends,

Warmly recommend this video conversation with Sri Annamalai Swami by Jim Lemkin on youtube:

A DVD copy of this video used to be distributed free with every copy of David Godman's biography of Swami-'Living by the words of Bhagavan'.

Watch how swami says towards the end-'All that I have said are only Bhagavan's words'-So typical of Swami. No one exemplified what it means to be a Disciple better than Sri Annamalai swami.

The Interpreter is Sri Sundaram who sent me this link yesterday.
Namaskar.

Raviji,

Thanks for your info. I don't see info regarding the music that is being currently broadcast in the station. Some of the songs before this Upanishad chanting were very beautiful but I did not know who the singers were or what albums the songs were from. Regardless, between the live camera of Arunachala and this station, what a blessing!

I met  15 days  before  Mr Vaidyanathan, at  Ramanashramam, computer room, who is incharge of Voice of Arunachala, Radio.  He said that some of the Sanskrit slokas broadcasting  in the Radio are available in cds at New York Raman Kendra.

I bought a cd Ramana Noon malai at Ramanashramam , by Prabakar Phoneix Groups.  Some of the songs from this cd also are broadcasting  in the Radio.  Sri Dakshinamoorthy Sthothram  is excellent in this cd both in Sanskrit and Tamil.

Jewell,
Thanks very much. The leelas (play)of Lord Sri krishna as a child are among the most endearing and charming. To the devotees,He is the enchanter and bewitcher, stealer of hearts. The music of the Flute that he plays entrances birds , beasts and humans alike steeping them in peace and bliss.
In TiruppAvai,Lady AnDAL refers to him as 'mAmAyan'-Lord of wondrous deeds. If we empty ourselves and become hollow,he will put us to his lips and blow his breath and  life itself will become the song.
Namaskar.

Dear Sri Ravi,

Yes,how true, how true! So far,i did not came across some story more beautiful, more charming, more delightful and alive than story and life about Sri Krishna. It is absolutely charming and enchanting. His Leela is most wondrous indeed. Everything about our Lord is sweet and lovely.Oh,He is indeed heart stealer!
I am completely in love in Vrindavan! How beautiful it is...

And how beautifuly Lady Andal described Sri Krishna.

Quote
If we empty ourselves and become hollow,he will put us to his lips and blow his breath and  life itself will become the song.

What more can we ask for?! I loved these words of Lady Andal. They made me feel something so special and deeply touched me...

Thank You so much, dear Sri Ravi Sir!

This is very nice song, but sorry somehow I can't find better original sanskrit text and English translation, only some version of it, but I hope that would be also enough to get a glimpse of how song is to be felt verbally along the non-verbal level of sound:

Lyrics

So we dance
So we dance
So we dance

Who says study, says work
Who says work, says money
Who says money, says expenses
Who says credit, says debt
Who says debt,says bailiff
Yes, also says being in shit

Who says love, says kids
Says forever and says divorce
Who says peers says mourning because problems never come alone
Who says crisis says world
says 3th world hunger
Who says fatigue, says waking
deaf from yesterday
So we party to forget the
problems

So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance

And then you say it's over, because worse
than this only death
When you believe you'll exit this
When there is more
and even more
Ectasy means problems
Problems or music
It grabs your guts and grabs
your head and you pray for it
to end
But it's your body, not the heavens
it's your mouth and your ears.
And then you scream harder but
it won't stop

So we sing: Lalalalalala,
Lalalalalala...
So we sing: Lalalalalala,
Lalalalalala...
So we sing

So we sing
And only when it ends,
we dance

So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance
So we dance

But wait, there's more
But wait, there's more
But wait, there's more
But wait, there's more
But wait, there's more

Alors on danse… (X3)

Alors on danse… (X9)
Alors on chante
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,
Alors on chante
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala

Alors on chante (x2)
Et puis seulement quand c'est fini, alors on danse.
Alors on danse (x7)
Et ben y en a encore (X5)

This is one wonderful video, dedicated to Shirdi Sai Baba,i am in love so much. I cannot stop listen to it. I actually do not understand what lady in introduction is saying,or many other words from song, but i understood some parts and i know it is talking about Sri Sai,His and God's Glory.
The music is absolutely beautiful, like the lady singer too,and her voice.

jewell,
The Ganesha 'Bhajan' is quite a symphonic composition.I have been thinking of sharing this 'Chants of India' set to music by the Great sitar Maestro pundit Ravishankar and produced by George Harrison(Beatles Group). It has the basic chants rendered in Traditional style with the music only embellishing it.You may like listen to it here:

Foreign tourists prefer to take ?inner girivalam path? despite ban
A.D.BALASUBRAMANIYAN
PRINT   ?   T  T

Two foreigners going past a newly drawn paint marking made by miscreants in the inner girivalam path in the reserve forest around Tiruvannamalai hill.

Since the 14- km-long Girivalam path that goes around the Tiruvannamalai Hill is urbanised and commercialised, foreign tourists and devotees tend to get into the reserve forest and make a circumambulation close to the hill.

Over the years, this practice created a foot path inside the forest. Some tourists have made markings with paint on the rocks and trees along the ?inner path? to guide others.

Nature lovers fear that the practice might attract vendors to set shops thus disturbing the tranquillity of the forest. In order to avoid this situation and also to contain repeated incidents of forest fire, forest department declared that nobody should use the area for girivalam .

The announcement initially helped contain the practice. Entry points that lead to the ?inner path? were closed with thorny twigs.

But with passage of time foreign tourists and others began using the inner path.

A member of a ?Friends of Forest?, a brigade of volunteers authorised by forest department to protect reserve forest, told The Hindu on condition of anonymity that if a volunteer stopped an intruder, they do not pay heed to their warnings.

Though the foreign tourists do not cause any harm to nature, it is an act of defying the law. Of late locals too are joining them. This may put pressure on afforestation drives,? he said. When asked about the phenomenon, Divisional Forest Officer Rajendran told The Hindu ,

?The ban to enter the inner path in the forest exists as ever. We don?t permit anybody to enter forest. We?ll look into the issue as soon as possible. ?
