Title: Ramana Maharshi tells What is the meaning of sashtanga namaskara

6th April, 1948

Bhagavan told the people near him: “Namaskara means prostration a number of times according to some. What can be done? The real meaning of namaskara is the dissolving of the mind.”

“What is the meaning of sashtanga namaskara, Bhagavan?” asked the devotee.

“It means that eight limbs of the body, namely, two hands, two legs, two arms, chest and forehead, touch the ground while saluting. The idea behind this type of obeisance is that the person doing it says, ‘the body which touches the earth, will resolve itself into that earth ultimately, and the “I” in me will continue to be “I” alone’.

That idea must be known to oneself by enquiry.

Without knowing it, there is no use in doing these. With meaningless namaskaras people want to secure all the benefits: ‘Swami must give them whatever they desire, be it a bag of clothes or money.’

There are some other types of Namaskarams.

1.  In case of women, they do Ashtanga Namaskaram.  Only two
breasts (chest in the case of male) should not touch the ground.

2. Dhanda Namaskaram is done by Sannyasis.  They should not
do namaskarams to anyone other than their mothers.  On all
occasions, they keep the Dhandam on the floor in between the
other party and themselves and do namaskarams to the Dhandam.

Bhagavan Ramana has said that the namaskaram is essentially
the bowing of the ego.  To a Guru or God, one's ego should subside
and this denoted by namaskaram.

He has also said that when everyone does namaskaram to Him,
He does in turn do namaskaram (even though He had no ego)
mentally, so that the Self prostrates to the Self.

Ribhu Gita says:  I am doing namaskaram to the Self within.
The individual self does namaskaram to the Self.
