Title: Siva is also a Vaishnavite
Post by: Subramanian.R on February 19, 2009, 11:49:50 AM
I mentioned about saint poet Kalamegam.  He was all his life trying to pacify the quarrels between Saivites and Vaishnavites. Once he
told them that Siva Himself is a Vaishnavite, and who do you quarrel.
His immediate ex tempore song reads as under:

She is the sister of the cowherd*, she is emerald-green in colour!
She came all the way from Mathura to Chidambaram,
And married the goat-herd** who is of golden hue!
She begot a child, to whom we pray and hit our temples***
He is an elephant-herd*** with elephant face, fat and green like
   his mother!
O! You do not know that the slender waist girl with bells around her
Who is she but the cowherd's sister!

(* Cowherd - Krishna, Sivakami is his sister, hence she is a Vaishnavite!
** goat-herd is a pun on the Tamil word, Aadu, literally goat,
but also means 'dancing'.  He is Siva, Nataraja in Chidambaram.
*** elephant-herd really means elephant-faced, Ganapati, who
is also green like his mother!
Since Sivakami is Vaishnavite, Siva who is only half of her is also
Vaishnavite.  Their son, having mother's emerald-green colour is
therefore also a Vaishanavite!)
